A 23 minute, very interesting Panoramas of Los Angeles between the late 1890s and early 1900s. Los Angeles is a a seaport City in SW California USA. 2,966,763; with suburbs 6,997,000; 452 sq. mi. (1170 sq. km).

I can not tell you just how excited i was when this video crossed my path, for i live just up the hill from where all this activity once took place. The Interurban Station has gone threw many chances since this footage, in 2008 it was restored and is now the new home of the Salvation Army  for selling used goods.

In case you are wondering where New Westminster is? It is found in the lower main land, the lower south west corner of British Columbia, Canada if you look on the map.

Found this intersting old clip from 1944 on a Home Inpection YouTube channel which is very much worth sharing.

“Problems of Housing” is a Encyclopedia Britanica film produced in 1944. It focuses on items like weather control, natural lighting, insect control and safety. Homes in this video range from $200 up to $5000 which are only affordable to the top 10% of citizens back then.

I found this gem in anyjazz65 flicker photo stream…. The Rose Parade back in 1939…. Seventy years ago the world was just as interesting a place as it is today…

Taken around 1925 – that’s my dad, 3rd kid from the left, being held by my grandma – don’t know the middle woman, but that’s grandma’s brother, Mack, with the hat. My Aunt Eunie (Dad’s sis) is the little girl on the cart, and I don’t know who the next kid is. I looked up the Cawston Ostrich Farm, and found it opened in 1896 and closed in the late 1920′s. I love this photo and was delighted to find it among the old family albums my step mom keeps. Wonder if there’s a Vintage Kids with Ostrichs group to join at flickr?…. (candyruth)

This is the trailer we had for many years of weekend and weeklong camping trips. As mentioned in the previous photo, my aunt and uncle had the same trailer and we often met at some campground or national park.
A couple of years later, Dad got a newer (’56) Buick that had the same 2-tone design as the trailer and had the trailer painted to match the car. It was a sight to behold. Then, in 1961, my parents sold the trailer so we could get new carpets in the bedrooms. An odd trade-up….(candyruth)

This was within the first year Disneyland opened and boy were we all excited! We lived only about 25 miles away, and it was the favorite place to go for birthdays (my sister and I could each bring one friend for such occasions) and to take visiting relatives. This aircraft is a Sikorsky S-40 “Flying Forest.” Sikorsky made 3 of these aircraft for Pan Am. They were used on the Miami to Panama run in the 1930s.

The Business Man

I really enjoy this one: Depicted is an obviously successful guy – just before The Depression (backside dated July 1929). I am really trying to figure out the roles each person played. The Boss can be clearly identified.

But who is the happy woman – like a servant – placed behind the hood of the car? An unusual pose. Is she his wife? Or indeed a servant ? Unlikely. When I look at her face, I see her contemplating I am not in front, but it is a good spot where life has put me in where I can enjoy prosperity from the second row.

Are the people on the left their children and spouses? Note how they are standing close to each other, while the arms of Mr.Boss have created more space for him. The woman on the left also stands out. Not only because of her size, but because her dress is much less fashionable than the other women. The most sexy girls are the ones close to Mr.Boss – that ultra-stylish hat from the 20′s, amazing!

I am wondering what finally happened to them in fall 1929? Could Mr Boss escape his economical fate and turned up even more successful after the stock market crash? Or did he have to sell his big house, his car and order his wife to get out behind her hiding space and join him to the West?

The car still remains to be identified – we should be thankful to the happy lady in the second row that she stepped behind so this task is now easier for us. Agree Jay El?

Actually the sun, having a hard time to break through on a foggy day in a small village in Central Switzerland. This was my first try with HDR and fog. HDR allows some more degrees of freedom which is a big advantage – photos taken in fog can easily become flat and boring.

Ok, I admit, here I pulled all the stops in Photoshop. As a fact I don’t like silver boxy-shaped cars. So I had them towed away. Also a blue tarpaulin was destracting. And because all of Photoshop’s function were lose, a destracting traffic sign and a sticker on the windshield of the Olds had to go, too:-)

Well, he was David Graham then. Later on he was Dr. David E. Graham, of Spruce Pine, Charlotte, Goldsboro, and Matthews (those are all in North Carolina, for you outlanders.) He was the most curious combination of extreme orneriness and extreme intelligence that I have ever met. My Uncle. My mother’s beloved brother (she
has two other brothers, and they are beloved too, but David was the oldest of the boys(the two girls came first), and I think that made a difference.) He was Phi Beta Kappa at Carolina, and then he went on to get his medical degree at the University of Maryland (I’m a bit hazy on some of these facts). He loved the Tarheels and he loathed the Terps. He told me they had a tank of nitrous in a closet off the delivery room in the hospital in Baltimore where he did his residency, and the boys would be in there whiffing on it right before they stepped back into the room to deliver the babies. I don’t think he was making that up. One time he stopped the car (with a bunch of nephews riding along) and said he had to go down this trail (we were up in the mountains) and see his moonshiner. I think he was making that up—he probably just had to take a leak.
He did have moonshine, though—patients gave it to him. He would shake it up and show you by the bead whether it was good or not.
Once, when he was much older, when the Alzheimer’s was just setting in, he asked my mother to take him to the “girly” bar (that’s probably not the word he used). And my mother, who is quite a genteel lady, took him in the car and they set out on a quest to find the “girly” bar. But when they got to where he thought it was, it wasn’t there anymore.
He let us (the sons, the nephews) puff the “see-gars” and sip the beers. He paid
me a quarter one time to let a llama at the Columbus zoo spit in my face a second time. I probably wanted the quarter, but more, I wanted to humor him.
He had a ferocious temper and he was capable of being extremely profane. He was, I think, the ultimate instigator. He loved a beautiful sunset—I think he could feel it in his soul.
I’m sure there are ten thousand stories about my Uncle David, and it saddens me that I only know a few of them. He was the Platonic ideal of the preacher’s kid.
I would imagine that almost everyone who knew him misses him.

I had to look a long time to find this car. I finally found one picture using google that identified it as a 1942 Chrysler.

It is probably a brand new car. It was purchased at Kavarno motors in California. Unusual name. Google found an Isak Kavarno who imigrated from Norway and worked for General Motors in Santa Barbara, California.

And Bonnie or maybe Mabel, blinked… She was dressed nice though. Pin-stiripe suit and strappy high heels. She is probably a little upset right now. She doesn’t know whether her boyfriend is taking a picture of her or his new car. I think she’s a bit miffed.

Her boyfriend smoothes it out though and 20 odd years later Lennon and McCartney will write a song about it…”Baby, you can drive my car.”

This was sent to me by second cousin, his mother was my grandfather’s sister. I am adding a portion of the email he used to describe this:
“My Great Grandfather on his son-in-law’s Harley Davidson at my Grandfather’s farm here in Wilson County. My brother Billy lives there now .” (Wilson County TX).
“We couldn’t figure out why the bike stood upright with him sitting there but have seen pictures since that shows a side car. He lost his right arm from as a result of a gun shot wound in the Civil war, and yes, he fought for the South. However, I believe some of our relatives fought on the other side too.”
Pretty good description, I can’t add more than that…
